Classic motorbikesDaily Food Buying On The Markets Of Kamala Beach On Phuket
Everyday there are local markets in the town of Kamala on the island of Phuket in Thailand. South near the road going to Patong there are markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This is where the local people go to buy their food and sell the food they harvested in the daytime. Local fishermen sell the catch of the day, and you will find many Mam and Pop shops selling sweets, BBQ steaks and a lot of fresh food. It is a busy market where you will be welcomed and seduced in trying to eat new food. The Thai people are really proud on their kitchen, as they should be!
Best is to take the car or motorbike when you go to the market, you will be buying a lot of things, as they are giving it away practically free!
In the north of Kamala there is a daily market, too. When you drive to Surin Beach in the north and pass Phuket’s famous themepark Phuket Fantasea you will find a daily market more focussed on clothes, DVDs, shoes and such. But of course also here there is a lot of mouthwatering food seducing you. Lovers of Japanese food will find that the Thai people love their sushi freshly made. You can choose from simple classic sushis to elaborate Thai / Japanese fushion sushi.
When I first came to Thailand I found fruits I did not see before and whose names were foreign to me. Now they belong to my favorites, such as the colourful Dragonfruit. Also I am real lover of Mangosteen. In the United States and Europe Mangosteen is sold as a treatment for all kind of diseases, labeled ‘Superfruit’ by foodies and those who pursuit a healthy living. Here in Kamala it’s part of my daily food, delicious, sweet and soft I mix it with cereals or yoghurt or just eat them like a snack when I come home from the beach.
The salespeople on the market will be happy to let you taste their food and share the Thai kitchen with their foreign guests. They are proud on their cuisine, just like Italian people or the French. Thai food comes from the basic Asian farmers kitchen, so it is easy to prepare and fits very well in a whole food menu.
